If this is your first planted tank I'd vote for a mix of Eco-Complete and Tahitian Moon Sand. It will grow plants and you will be able to get plants to stay where you put them. Besides, I am partial to a black substrate.

I haven't seen black flourite anyplace yet, not that I would actually look for it, so I can't offer an opinion about it.

I am using Seachem Onyx Sand...which is black and seems to be doing well for my plants. It is not as fine as "sand" you would get at the Home Depot...but my plants stay put and are growing rapidly.

Okay better question, since I saw pic of TMS on Big Als.. .

why mix tahitian moon sand and eco complete instead of all eco complete?

Does it hold the plants down better. ?

Yes, that is, this is what I have been lead to believe from the postings here on the forum.

Except, I planted a 20gallon with straight eco complete, and not a single plant has floated up out of the substrate. I see no reason to mix TMS with Eco, unless you like the look.

There is no 'black' flourite...there's normal, and red. Onyx sand is indeed a coarse, heavy grain, and it will increase your pH and Kh by a small, but measurable amount.

Also, Onyx sand is grey, not even a dark grey. And Moon sand is very fine, inert, and $20 a bag. It lasts about 24 hours on the surface with Onyx in my tank with MTS. After that, it's appearance is a disappearance below the surface. Buck was the pioneer here with Eco plus Moon sand. Maybe he'll chime in.
