In my continuing effort to use bandwidth here at The Planted Tank, I've fallen to a new low. This is the 30g. growout tank I've mentioned on occasion. It's horribly scratched up on the top third of all the glass, so she ain't purty, but the price was right- free. Now that I've got the makin's for a dy-no-mite substrate (more on that later), I'm running out of excuses not to set up the 65. Not to mention room to house all these plants! I think you'll agree my aquascaping skills have come to the forefront once again in this etude de nature aquatique. I call it The Tossed Salad. C'est magnifique, n'est pas?

I'm always afraid to let it grow THAT thick because when I did, the leaves at the bottom of the plants all turned yellow and then rotted because of unsufficient light. Does that happen to you like in your lower right corner?
Looks great by the way!

Tres magnifique! But stop the teasing and set up that already famous 65. Can't be that hard... And then... the substrate? Engrais de taureau?

That's probably where I drew the line, but right now I have 80 lbs. Eco, 40 lbs. Volcanit, 25 lbs. lignite, a bag of peat, a bag of worm castings, and an environmental suit to wear when I mix it up together. Really, I'm just hoping it doesn't blow up after it's set up. I was going to add potting soil also, but do you know, they are adding ferts to just about everything available. Can't find any without pesticide or Osmocote or some other such thing.

Bull fertilizer, indeed. Look, don't tempt me!

Raul-7, the substrate on this is Profile and mulm, with a bag of Flourite added over top as the plants needed more depth. That Profile absolutely needs something heavier over it. I also dropped in some Onyx sand for buffer.

Grow-outs are great places to grow plants for sale and swap! That is what I have been doing with mine. It has become a real ecclectic collection area!

Anything you want to swap out of there Aquaverde?

Mike

The fish do love it in there. There aren't very many, though. SAEs, harlequins, Chaetostoma thomasii, otos, and my male Ancistrus.

It's lit with AHSupply 96W PC and one 30W NO Aquaray (9325K). The Aquaray is for looks, really. I love the color of those bulbs.

The Aquarays are pretty famous, esp. the 55W PCs. You'll find an incredible amount of info on the board if you do a search on 9325K.

I use NO bulbs in 15 and 30W over my tanks. They make reds stand out quite vividly and promote photosythesis quite well. Some don't like the color by itself, and prefer to mix it the way I have on this tank. This light setup is going on a larger tank (65g) once I get it done, and the 30 is coming down. The hood will have two more 30W NO Aquarays installed in an AHS reflector before going on the new tank.
