I just use a little "filter floss" (actually craft batting) in my sump to filter out the larger particles. I think I've only changed it twice since I started the tank.

I haven't had any problems yet...and the water is remarkably clear considering. I haven't lost any living creatures except one unlucky shrimp that got wedged in the overflow strainer.

Finally, I've had algae problems. I think this has more to do with my young tank, a lack of CO2, and an abundance of light. :?

I have been doing it since last September on a 65g. It is quite a struggle when beginning! You definitely need a lot of plants from the start (which I did not have) or problems can arise. The most I have for filtration is a small sponge on the Rio powerhead.

Problems I had for about 2 months were green water and various algae taking hold of the tank. Starting January, things are starting to look up as my tank is now filled with more plants and the algae is not as bad.

hey there, i had a very similar question not too long ago right here.

Did you get the idea of a filterless tank from Ocean's?

I'm not sure who you are addressing, but what do you mean by "idea"? I'm just really cheap!

My HOB filter died last week. I thought I'd try to go cheap, bought a small pump/powerhead, and put a sponge in the intake. But my wife said it was too noisy. So I ordered an Eheim.

The tank has been without filtration/circulation for a week now, but for my standard Sat (30%) and Wed (10%) water changes. Things look better than ever! The filter should come in by the end of this week.

evilken, does ocean even use filters in their tanks? i didn't get the idea from them, but here's my situation,... i got two 20G acrylic tanks that i want to put side by side and i've got a custom sealife 2 x 65w hood for the lighting so each tank gets one of the 65 w bulbs over it.. i have two penguin 660 powerheads that i used to use for my 55g but i was thinking of putting them into my 20g's and therefore i wouldn't need canister filters for them if i've got good circulation... the only thing i think i'll need is a prefilter of some sort...but i can't find penguin prefilters..

Ocean's is a LFS around here that specializes in planted tanks. When i go there a lot of his tanks are running filterless. So, i was wondering if hubbahubbahehe got his idea from that store. =)

Actually, ive seen one HOB filter at Ocean's and its always hanging on different tanks on the FRONT side. Im guessing he gives all his tanks a little time with the filter throughout the day or week.

Maybe the store is using accu-clear and the filter to polish the water in all the tanks.

Do you guys consider HOB a "filter"? Similar to a powerhead, no?
