I am about to purchase an eclipse 6 tank. From what i was reading on the petsmart site (where im gonna purchase it from) it only comes with an 8w light which wont be enough. I was wondering what length light will an eclipse 6 system hold? thanks.

I have an Eclipse 6, it comes with 8Watts of T5 bulb. Why not buy a 5 Gallons Minibow from Wal-Mart for $35? Wal-Mart also carry the 10Watts 65K screw in Power Compact bulb for $5. Your local fish store might have the 20Watts Coralife screw in PC bulb for around $12.

I kinda hated my Eclipse system. It's noisy if the water level is not right and I can't sleep with it being in my bedroom. You can get 13Watts or 28 Watts retro kit for it from Hellolight, AhSupply or Home Depot. Or you can just remove the top and get one of those 13Watt PC desk light. The AGA/Whisper hum a little bit if I sit close by to hit, but I can't hear it from further away.
Just so you understand, the light that comes with the 6G Eclipse is a T5 bulb, it's not your normal size T8, or T12. The lower the T rating, the more efficient the bulbs are.

Thanks for all the info. It wont be in my bedroom but in my living room. Then what wattage would it be equivilant to a normal sized bulb? a 28 watt sounds good as it will be very heavily planted, unless the t5 that comes with it is more efficient.

The answer to your question is no. There is no higher wattage bulb that will plug into that top. You will have to retrofit with somtehing else, either a different top or maybe a kit from ahsupply.com

Florecent bulbs are not like incandecent bulbs where you can go from one wattage to another. To change wattage requires a different size bulb and different ballast.

Will that type/wattage of bulb be sufficient for a heavily planted tank?

For a smaller tank such as this one you will want @3watts per gallon
