Rams: Help Identifing Sex and if Paired.

The little one chases the big one around. The big one gets faded, but at night has full colors back, and after eating gets his/her full color.

Big one is often faded.

Its kinda hard to tell with rams if they paired up or not generally they just get tye deed done when nobody is looking. Go find you a nice smooth flat black rock stick it at the bottom of the tank they should lay eggs on it. Try to get a good rock that you would use as a skipping rock.

Thanks a lot! One question down.

Now what should I do? Tank is 81c, ph 6.5, and all readings are 0. The female doesn't seem interested in the male. It's been 4-6 months and not even one spawning attempt.

With her size its likely she is too old. Ive had quite alot of rams and never had any luck with females larger than the male but this is just personal experience.

In that case should I add another Female to the mix, or would that be problematic? 45 gallon tank, highly planted.

My best advise for any type of courting "pairing" is when they flutter all their fins at eachother rapidly, your female with all her fins tucked in like that looks to me like shes just annoyed being harrased by a young horny male lol.

I think the big one does just that. When the little one shows it's fins the females bottom fins are always against her body. I will try my best to observe this for verification.

I would go get a couple 2-3 smaller females the female he choose's as his partner will shew away the rest from him. An easier way to tell the sex when purchasing is if there is blue in the rear black spot for females.

Here male on left has no blue on his spot female on the right does. just for reference you get used to looking at them after a bit. Take notice of the topfin aswell. pink belly no spikes on the front of her top fin blue in the rear black spot.

Will I need to get rid of the other 2, or will the all be ok?

Thanks, that picture was very helpful.

The pink tummy is beautiful. Your female is beautiful. Are there tummies pink when they are young too?
