Ive seen these things in many mags/catalogs/www-sites/etc. But they are expensive, too much so for me. BUT I would like to be able to benefit from them also(without paying the 100+ usd to get one). I noticed that the replacement parts are just pennies, compared to the total cost. A filter sleave and the filter material for one was about 10-12 usd... now the rest of the system is something to draw water into the fitler/through tthe material in the sleeve/ and then back out into the tank... NOW>>> I think you could make one out of a cheep small pump and some pvc.. but are there any people that have done this???

Hi fedge,

Welcome to the Planted Tank, the answer to all your questions!!!

I have not DIY'd a diatom filter, but bought a HOT Magnum 250 for $40, and some diatom powder for $5, which works great! For about $50, I think it is not worth to diy, considering that with the Magnum you get a fairly well designed canister filter that could serve as a backup or regular filter too... If you add the cost of the sleeve and pump and pvc and connections and whatnot, you would probably not save a hole lot, and probably risk having to deal with wet carpets and a snowy diatom landscape in your tank...

Assemble what? The filter? Just according to the instructions, I think...
It comes with one micron cartridge, which is used when doing diatom filtration. If you are interested, do a little search here for "diatom", this has been discussed a few times.
