6.6 planted, 3-month update

The first and hardest 3 months, the first 3, are behind me so I wanted share my progress.

The first month was very smooth followed by 6 weeks of terrible algae. It was fustrating, and I've invested a lot of this small tanks bioload in a clean up crew. My only issue now is spot algae.

Here's a shot taken the the tank was approximately 2 weeks old.

Here's it now about 3 months later.

Close up picks (point and shoot macro)

Thats a really cool little tank. When I first looked at the pictures, I thought it was like a 30gal or a 55. The scale of the plants and the fish also compliment its size. Where did you get it?

It looks great!

Default Tank

I bought it from Petco. I think it's called Aqua Garden BookShelf 6.6 Kit.

Stock setup will grow plants. It's a T8 15w with an HOB I think rated at 70gph.

I upgraded the lighting the Coralife T5 2x14w hood.

I upgraded the HOB to AQ20, rated at 100 gph.

The tank is long for its capacity, 24", so I added a bubble wand to combat surface scum and give oxygen to an overstock fish population.

Thanks for the kind words. The dwarf baby tears foreground is fantastic. It's a slow grower but dense. I believe this is one of the smallest leaf plants in the hobby.

Dwarf fish and shrimp also make the scale work. The dwarf pencilfish and rasboras are smaller than 1/2 inch.

The last frontier was algae. I had BBA, Hair, Stag, Spot, and dust all at once. Made some adjustments, was left with spot and stag. Added SAE which grazes the stag down (but not 100%). Now I'm left with spot. The plastic scratches very easily, I've already scratched it with the algae magnet. I'm going to try a toothbrush next time.

I have the same tank and the same GSA problem. The tank scratches very easy,
It got so frustrating I tore it down and opted for an 5.5 AGA tank.
Now I use the bookshelf tank for a quarantine tank.
If you ever beat the GSA problem with that tank I'd like to know how you did it.

I thought the same thing. Nice tank.

I think I've seen the same package at Petco before. I might have to check into getting one of these.

Default Gsa

i'm convinced the green spot is a direct result of the 28w of light. i have an 8 hour photoperiod, but i would probably have better results with 5-6 hours, but then i'd never get to enjoy it!

i'm going to try a tooth brush first. i'm going to drain the tank low, and use an Excel & Algaecide mix as a "toothpaste" and brush the GSA. then i'll wipe it dry and refill. i'll run carbon to catch any residues. i'll post updates with pictures.

Try dosing some phosphates, especially during water change when you can shoot the GSA directly.

The more I look at this tank, the more I like it! I didn't notice the bubble wand until you mentioned it and I still don't really see the filter intake. I'm really going to have to fight to not get one of these tanks. They're great looking!

How tall is it? And I'd love if you broke down what plants are where in your tank. I see what looks like HC and dwarf sag on the bottom/left. And what looks like micro sword on the right. I'm really interested in knowing some of the plants in the back are mostly. Thanks!

sorry for the delay - holidays have kept me busy.

off hand, the height is about 9 inches, width 24, and depth maybe 5-6 inches.

plants... front
left: chain sword
middle: dwarf baby tears
right: microsword

mid is mostly wood & rock

rear
left: Aponogeton boivinianus, ludwigia, rotala
middle: dwarf lotus, aponogeton (unknown african var.)
right: crypts, dwarf sag, penny wort

what a jumble of plants i know.

i'm happy with most of the plants. apono was way too tall. i dont like the rotala leaf shape. the chain sword needs to be kept from overtaking the baby tears. the baby tears is a very slow creeper but looks great as long as i can keep the algae off. microsword is finally sending out runners into the front right corner. lotus is easy to keep short. pennywort is a trade off. its hard to keep it clean of duckweed but shades the crypts so i keep it in.

i found the bubble wand was needed in order to keep surface film for building up due to the narrown dimenions of the tank circulation was a concern.

I've seen that tank at Petco and came close to buying one before. Great job on making it look much larger than it really is.
