I have a very shy pleco in one of my well lit planted tanks. He is always looking for a good place to hide, so the other day I built him one. I got a big piece of drainage pipe, black, 4" diameter X 1' long, and put it in the tank in the corner. I figured he'd love it, but he won't go near it. I observed him put his head halfway in once or twice, then freak out and swim away. The other fish love swimming around in it, but my pleco doesn't want anything to do with the new fixture. It's been several days now, and he still hasn't warmed up to his new home. Any ideas on how to "fix" the cave?

How big is your pleco? Is the hiding place to big for him to consider it a hiding place? Animals in general often take some time to adapt to something new in their environment, so it may be just a matter of him getting used to it. Maybe put some of his favorite food in the pipe?

My pleco is a pretty big boy, 11" long from nose to tail. So thought the size would have been about right. One thing is the 4" pipe is a little bit too tall. I've thought about cutting it in half length-wise to give a 2" tall cave. I've tried putting food, algae discs, in the cave with limited success. It's been over a week now and I think I'll have to make some changes.

Security Question
While balancing on a piece of wood, two inches by four inches known as a 2x4, John and his friend Sally both spotted a dalmatian inside of a truck with sirens. The animal with John and Sally is a _ _ _?
