I'm at the end of my rope. I have low dreams of a decent looking tank that may seem unattainable.
I have algae that I just can't shake and I'm trying to figure out what it is.

It's a brown algae that coats the leaves of most of my plants (really bad on the amazon swords, sunset hygro and mondo grass) It won't come off easily when I rub the leaves which makes me think it's not diatom. But coats the plants but doesn't get really tall or bushy which makes me think it must not be beard algae. Does anyone have anything like this?
Thanks
Heather

tank specs:
My tank is a 20 gallon high (pH = 6.8-7.0, soft water, temp is at 80 C, Nitrates, nitrites and ammonia are 0)
Lighting is 65 W coralife plant (about 2 months old)
I add flourish 1-2X per week, flourish excel daily
substrate: 40lb flourite
set up: 12/02
Fish: 2 ottos, 2 flying foxes, 1 dwarf gourami, 1 angel fish, 1 unhappy danio I haven't been able to catch yet.
no CO2 added

Good light and no nitrates are providing good conditions for algae. Try to get nitrates up to 5 to 10 ppm. Check on phosphates too, they should be at about 1/10th of the nitrate levels. Add plants, be patient, and soon you will wonder where all the algae went.

Do you have a picture?

Your Temp is 80C

I don't think so :P

Sounds like diatom. I understand you don't think it is, but that'd be my guess.

BTW

Your nitrates shouldn't be zero. What are your phosphates?

Do you use CO2?

Let's start with these questions to try begin to solve y'r problem.

Dose it look like this crap?

I'm struggling with it. Trying to keep my NO3 and PO4 in the right areas. You can shake it and it floats around then sticks to the first thing it hits. Clean it all out at night and by the end of the next day its all back.

I'm working on getting the pics and phosphate values. Would it be more helpful to get micro or macroscopic pics. Maybe I should post both. I meant to bring some in today to get pics but I forgot.
I probably won't have the phosphate values till next week. Just no time to run by the fish store. (You know it's time to make life changes when you don't have time for your fish..lol)

In the mean time, I'm confused as to whether I'm supposed to keep the lighting down to kill algae and give plants a chance to get aheadů or increase the lighting??? I've heard advise to do both.

Do I cut back on adding fertilizer or increase (Heard advise on both ways on that as well!)

Finally they just got in Florida Flag Fish at the fish store, Is it worthwhile for me to pick up on of those when I go in next week.

Finally, should I cut back on the fish feeding to encourage the algae eaters to eat more algae?

Do I add CO2?...
No, I'm adding flourish excel which is supposed to provide an organic source of carbon for the plants. I add it daily or every other day.

The tank stays at a toasty 80 F

Thanks
Heather
