Hi, I just got my Iron water tester yesterday; did a water change today and added the regular dose of Leaf Zone. Did my testing and my free iron level was at 0 but my chelated iron level was at 0.5 mg. From the chart on the iron tester kit (Nutrafin) they say 0.25-0.5 is fine but 0.5 + to do a partial water change. Do you think I should do another water change as I don't know much about chelated iron except that it is suppose to be safer then free iron (non-toxic)? Won't be adding anymore Leaf Zone until the test shows that the iron is down; that is for sure . I have 9 Orandas (not full grown) and two plecos in the tank.
Thanks for any replies.
By the way, anyone know how long it takes before the chelated iron goes down. Guess it would depend on how fast your plants are growing?
Thanks
Wendy

I've never tested for iron but when I was reading about the different test kits awhile ago I read many times that iron tests are very inaccurate.

Hi, well this one is testing for chelated iron so it would seem; so if I didn't have this tester I might have put more iron into the tank; this way I won't be until the reading goes down. A couple of weeks ago when I ordered this tester in as the store was out of stock; the pet store did an iron test on my water and it showed I didn't have any; so I did add more then I should have because of that.
So I figure it must be working, somewhat?
Do you add chelated iron and/or supplements and if so, how do you know you have added enough or not enough without a tester?

What test kits are you using to test for free and chelated iron?

I have a Red Sea Fe test kit but it seldom registers a reading, even after a heavy dose of Plantex. I prefer to watch the plants for deficiency (iron chlorosis: brittle stems, yellowing between veins, etc.) or iron abundance (algae).

still, going off everything my 'elders' have said, NONE of the iron test kits out there are good at measuring low levels of iron. This is why most just dose a small amount, say 2 mL of flourish Iron in a 75 gallon tank, every 2 days.

Unless you found a LaMotte iron test kit, I wouldn't rely on it as 'accurate'

Good morning everyone; no it is a Nutrafin iron tester; actually the only store in the whole area that sold any iron tester at all. If I am in another area will keep my eyes open for a LaMotte tester though.
Beautiful 75 gal Malkore; question - what kind of filtration unit do you have on this tank as it doesn't look like any movement on the top of the water?
Fish are doing fine this morning; no ill effects to the iron anyway; so that is good.
Thanks everyone,
Wendy

I have a Rena Filstar XP2 for filtration. Seems a lotta people put an XP3 on thier 75's, but I find the XP2 to be sufficient.
