8800K bulb

I just received my first 96watts 8800K bulb. I am really impressed with the color. It is exactly the color I like. You all know how we all like to mix a couple different bulbs to get the right color for our view (6500 with 10000, 6700 with 9325 , etc.). The way I see it, it's like a mix of 6700 and 9325. It's really white, no green or yellow hew, a tint of blue (hardly noticeable). So, it's basically perfect natural white.

I'm not sure whether is good for plants though. Does anybody know?

Kelvin really doesn't mean anything for plants. The bulbs that you want to stay away from are the actinic ones, which are high in the green area of the spectrum.

You want a bulb that is high in the blue and red areas of the color spectrum. This is the area that is most beneficial for your plants. All that Kelvin measures is what color the light appears to the human eye. At 8700K, that sounds like a nice comfortable level. Below 6000K, things appear too green.

Power compacts in general are a great choice, if not the best for tanks under 4 feet in length. They offer a great color choice for you (Kelvin), Long life, little degradation, and they pretty much provide even lighting amounts.

With bulbs, PAR, or photosynthetic radiation, gives us the best idea as to how great the bulb is for our plants. Unfortunately, most bulbs do not provide this information.

I am still confused on one thing though. everybody says that plant will do good if the bulb gives plenty of red and blue spectrum but when I look at the graph for 6500,6700 and 8800, none of them peak at blue and red regions. All of those white bulbs peak on green and orange. Did I read it incorrectly?

I think you might have misread it, or got a bad copy of the chart.

I agree, I like my 8800K too, and the only reason I ordered it (besides teh fact it was on sale for $17) was that Amano uses 8800k's in all his display tanks.

I'm just setting up my 54 gal corner tank and I have 130 watt 6700K PC light and an additional 65 watt PC. I'm going to get a new bulb for the 65 watt and just found a 8800K that fits it. Would this be a good addition to the 130 watt or should I just get another 6700K?

I would add the 8800 or even 10000k since you've had 2x6700 already. This way, you can even out the yellowish color taht the 6700 give and make it more natural (white). But this is my personal taste. I know a lot of poeple like the sunshine yellowish hue. And some how, the 6700K bulb emits more and more yellow overtime.

Nope, it just give a bit more blue than 8800 and slightly make the plant or fish color a bit dull or pale. I'm just picky. I don't think most people realize the difference.
