if we start going there and introducing PLANTS to them, it'll spread some of the focus on plants!

no point in separating plant ppl and fish ppl! we should all band together!
It waxes and wanes -- I've been to meetings when there were more plants than fish, and bags of common plants went for higher $$ in the auction than bags of rare fish.

I've also been to meetings with javamoss as the only plants. It all depends on what people bring (and who shows up).
Its actually a very "plant savvy" group as a whole -- Karen Randall from the AGA is a long time member ( and the resident 'plant guru'), but a very large % of the standing membership keeps planted tank.
However - only about half the people at the meetings tend to be "members" -- there are alot of transient, occasional attendees to the meetings, so sometimes you'll see 50 people at a meeting and only 6-10 of them brought items for auction. Some months those 6-10 people are the plant growers, some months those are the guppy crowd, some months it feels like they all brought cichlids.

Also - like most clubs, this is an all-volunteer group. The auctioneer doesn't get paid, and different people end up auctioneer-ing on different months, so your mileage may vary Jim (the most common auctioneer) is generally pretty good with plant ID.

Me - not so much.
If I'm the auctioneer, it gets auctioned off as what it is labeled -- I trust whomever grew/bred/propagated an item to know more about it than I do. And while I babble alot, I read even more than I talk, so there are many plants names that I recognize but have not heard or spoken before -- so I butcher alot of plant names, and I might have been the one who butchered your plant names

Kinda like web-forums, clubs are only as good as the people who put effort into them. Unlike web-forums, we can't contribute while we're supposed to be working
If you become a paid club member, and go to meetings, and express interest in plants (plant talks, etc) AND bring plants and plant friendly fish to meetings -- you'll see more interest in plants and related topics, and more plants at the meetings.

(When I was booking club speakers I generally tried to book Karen or somebody else to do at least one planted talk per year, plus talks on aquascaping, shrimps, etc )

Springfield Massachusetts here! Anyone else from the western part of the state? I found a great place for plants in Northampton, called AquaViewDesign.com . They focus on aquascaping freshwater tanks, and have a small shop where they sell fish and plants for planted tanks (you won't find oscars there). Check it out if you are out west!

I was a member of the pvas out here, and will be going to their next meeting.
