Ah, one of God's little accidents, Happy Birthday Mula and you are beautiful in a ugly kinda horrifying way.

Wasser she eats moths and is kinda disguised as a moth for an aerial view!

That's funny about the cataracts because I took a photo of a 6+ year old P. pulcher yesterday and notice the lenses were very cloudy, make sense to me.

Impressive fish keeping there, wasser.

Is it weird that I never noticed what exactly your avatar was? Apparently I'm not that observant.

From above the head always reminds me of a rattlesnake or viper for some reason.

BUT they are much gentler and docile, towards me anyway.

It's those big nostril along with the bulging eyes.

Do they always stay at the suface and evolution has given them those feelers so they know whats comming from below?

They always stay at the water surface, and are completely helpless against anything approaching from below. Only thing they can do is to jump (which doesn't work well in covered tanks, and would most likely be deadly in uncovered ones).

Since they are better looking up than down, I think in nature the extensions could help them judge when they swim into areas that become too shallow. They might help them to stay anchored between plants in rivers where they would otherwise drift around (they don't like water movement). They could also confuse predators and make it more difficult to spot them, you know, like camouflage used by moths/tigers/snakes etc.

Wow, it's funny they don't like water movement with all the appendages you'd think they would be strong swimmers but I guess they are all about stealth and food.

How could you miss that Avatar? It's a bird, a fish, a grasshopper, I mean you gotta click on it just to see if leads you to a bigger photo!

Almost 5 years ago I started this thread, so here we are, still together, celebrating about 10 years of ABF life!

She is still as happy as always, you can tell by her smile. Even though her eyes became a bit clouded over the years, she is still quick. If I drop an insect into the tank just right, it ends up in her mouth at the same moment that it touches the water surface.

This is the male, from a low angle. He was taking a sunbath or something... sitting on top of a Bolbitis leaf with half of his body out of the water. Silly critters.

I know! Should probably look for a photo from their earliest years and put it into the OP as a starting point.

Wow, I'm trying to imagine having a fish for 10 years, this is impressive. Beautiful couple, happy birthday to the lady!

What a nice record to have for such a small thing, I have an SAE that's 7 and looks to be in good health, I also have a Kribensis the same age but he is on his last leg.

Way to go Mula!!!

You know I don't think I've ever seen one of these for sale at the LFS.

Such a good looking fish and with her cataracts, it makes it all the more endearing. Congratulations on making a decade with Mula! How often are you feeding her now? And too cute on the boy. I love the sun bathing. My shrimp love to do the same thing, but it is hilarious to see a fish that size doing that.
