Bullying platy

I have an aqueon evolve 8 with some crypts, xmas moss, anubias nana and a java fern.
Had it running for about a month now introduced two male platies 4 days ago they were fine in the first 2 days now one male just terrorizes the other one won't let him eat.
I returned both of them back to Petsmart because they looked like they had contacted ick.
I want to keep platies because my daughter just loves them and was wondering if I can keep two females together or do I to have some male to female ratio, plus I don't want a population explosion if I can help it.

I think two females could work out well (not a platy guy, but big on guppies). You could probably do a 1:2 or 1:3 male to female ratio. To keep the populations low, you could either remove the pregnant fish and put them in a breeder box or you could leave the fry in and the fish may eat them.

I have lots platys and 2 females are less likely to bully each other than 2 males .

Two completely diff colors are nice.
