UP AQUA AQUA SAND AVAILABLE NOW! GreenLeafAquariums.com

So I have been mentioning this new soil for a while now and it is finally here and ready to be purchased through www.GreenLeafAquariums.com in both Black and Red.

For those of you who have not heard about it here is the jist of it. I had sent samples of this soil to a couple big planted aquarium stores and to Tom Barr to test and try out. Great reviews! This soil is a combination of their Shrimp sand and Aqua Soil, the result is a great plant soil which is good for shrimp and improves on the break down problem that ADA and every other brand of soil on the market have. They do this throw the production process, if you get it you will notice that each grain of soil is denser. This also eliminates a lot of the mess from soils.

Here is what Tom Barr said on his thread about it:

"The size is now smaller than the old UP aqua soil.

Same nice black color, smaller grain sizing than the ADA AS, I'd say about 3-4 mm, good for finer foreground plants.

I redid a tank and did not even remove the soil recently using this product for a client. Very impressed with the lack of mess. Longevity is yet to tested, but the results so far seem much better than ADA when it comes to turning to mush/muck.

The trade off there is less NH4, but that's a simple solution to add more/KNO3 etc.

Some might suggest the harder grains are harder for plant roots to enter, but roots are pretty tough and bore right into rock. I doubt plant roots would have any problem with this, and it seems that it will hold together and last longer.

They also seem to have a better quality control system than ADA does on the soil which if viewing the past post over the years, has been variable/not without issues. I've yet to read a less than glowing review on this product line. Some in other countries have used it for about 3-4 years now without issues."

I'm interested. Any way to get this now, or order through my LFS? It's out of stock at GreenLeaf.

Out of stock already? I don't think so they just got it. It may be he has not even made it available yet and it just says out of stock. In fact I saw on the site he is still trying to get it up and available on the site so just keep your eye out when he activates it.

Yeah I just saw this on their facebook page posted 19 hours ago:

"Up Aqua Sand has just arrived. Should be ready to order in 24hrs. There will be 2 color options, black and a natural clay type color."

Got two bags of the black.

Love it so far and it did not cloud the water when filling. You can just take a few pellets in between your fingers and TRY to crush them. I can see this substrate lasting a long time.

What are the buffering capabilities of this soil?

Definitely still on the fence as I wasn't expecting it to be a slightly smaller bag and more expensive than aquasoil.

How many bags would give good coverage on a 48 gallon Mr Aqua?

4-5 bags depending on how thick you want it. But also you have to figure how long other soils last and then figure in the cost to change it out more frequently than the Aqua Sand. So you may buy 2-3 bags of Amazonia to Aqua Sand's 4-5, But you will have to replace the other soils more often. It should balance out. Not to mention the benefits of your soil not turning to dust and getting all over your plants every time you stir the water a little bit.

Ok, I didn't the length of use into account. Definitely will be going this route then. Thanks

Would like to see some prior to buying it but no local retailers seem to have this in Southern California.

We are bringing in more on the 20th of this month so it should start spreading out a little more.

Looking to see how this all turns out. Definitely some serious dough being thrown at this!

Great craftsmanship as well!
