I have a 20 gallon long that I want to convert to a planted tank. I have two bags of tahitian moon sand and one bag of eco complete (20 lbs each).

When I was washing the sand yesterday I realised how tightly compacted it can get. My question now is, is it better to use 2 bags of eco-complete and 1 bag of the sand, to avoid the compacting? Is the compacting even an issue?

I didn't open one of the sand bags so I can return it.

I've posted a similar question to the gurus, and what I got back from them was that it was ok to mix in the sand....but that you'll probably want to use a 50/50 ratio or smaller. I'm going with 3 bags of eco and 1-2 bags of moon sand for my 46 bowfront.

thanks. I will most likely use 2 bags of eco complete and 1 bag of the sand.

BTW, I love that title: "Algae Grower". I am such a newbie at planted tanks that even with all my fancy substrate and lighting, that is probably all I will get to grow in the tank.

I went with the 2 bags of EC to one of the sand and am quite happy with it. 1:1 ratio wouldn't be to bad either, imho.
