Question about the Telathera Cardinalis - does your tank have upgraded lighting or just stock? Are you dosing any ferts? Doing any CO2?

My lighting is just a regular tank hood with a 10watt bulb, I believe, and a 12 watt. I'm not sure if that is the correct watts or not, but it's around that.

I am not dosing any ferts. I'm not doing anything with the tank right now besides feeding the snails peices of potatoes and sinking algea bites. I'm honestly surprised the Telathera Cardinalis has done so well. I was prepared to buy liquid ferts, as I've heard that red plants need high light, but it's been growing well, slowly but well. The bacopa is growing faster than the TelC, but there's no surprise in that. It's even keeping it's red color fairly well, which I'm surprised with as well. I can't wait to move my fish back into the tank. But, I want to have it all cycled before I do that and I just can't seem to get anyone to buy me ammonia... I keep asking but my mom's always complaing about icy roads and the fact that Ace is on the other side of the city from us... Oh well, I'll just have to keep waiting.

Because I actually have something that living in this tank that I have spent money on, I'm going to start up 25% water changes a week again.

Huh... I may have to give some a try then I've got a 5 gallon planted that needs a spot of color. I suppose the worst thing that could happen is for it to melt away.

I actually got quite lucky here recently. My LFS (the non-chain one) carries a brand called Aqualife. They bottle ammonia specifically for cycling. Of course you have to be careful not to use a water conditioner that binds ammonia... otherwise you're just adding ammonia for no reason...

Yeah, I'd love to have a LFS around here, but the closest one is 200 miles away...

I think it would do alright in a 5 gallon tank. You'd have to keep it trimmed, but it's a slow enough grower in a low-tech tank that even that shouldn't be too hard.

I got some ammonia a few days ago. Because of the nerites I couldn't cycle the filter in the planted tank. So, I dug out my last 10 gallon, filled it up, put the heater and the filter in it, and dosed it up to 4ppm. After a day I still had plenty of ammonia but had a high nitrite reading. The next day ammonia was low enough that I added some more. Yesterday I did a test and found that I had no ammonia and very little nitrite. So, I dosed it back to 4ppm again and waited 24 hours. This time, I got no ammonia and no nitrite. Excited, I put the heater and filter back in the planted tank and fished the fish out of the quarantine tank. They are no in their real home and are swimming happily.

I'll get some pictures up tomorrow. I hope any change of ick is gone now that 10 days have passed but in time I'll find out for sure, I guess.

On a side note, my 55 gallon tank has worms. I think it's because I haven't been vacuuming the gravel. So, I got a gravel vacuum and vacuumed 1/3 of the gravel in the tank. The water that I took out looked like swamp water. Nasty. Hopefully I can get rid of those nasty little worms.

Good night, good afternoon, good morning, or good day to all.

Well, sorry about not updating. My plants have taken off (the telanthera quite litteraly (more on that in a moment)) and every one is alive and healthy. I lost a guppy to a pictus catfish (long story) so now I have 2 guppies and 5 serpaes in the tank.

Anyway, pictures soon! Hopefully after I fix a slight problem...

The tank is horrible looking right now... Somehow (and don't ask me how because I have no idea) my telanthera has come uprooted slightly... It's taking over the tank! It had been growing so well that I was forced to cut it back (it grew out of the water !) yes, I was surprised. That was maybe two weeks ago. So, imagine my surprise when I noticed that it was growing out of the water level again... So, I got the cutters out and was going to trim it when I noticed a slight problem... Only a couple stems were actually rooted in the water.

Now I can't get them back in the gravel... Whenever I shove one back down, another pops up.

Any suggestions? How do I get the stupid plants to stay down???

PICTURES ARE HERE!

Oh how I wish I'd done before and after pictures of this trim. I just started hacking away with my scissors and hoped for the best. When I was done, I sat back and just watched the fish. I couldn't believe how much different the tank looks!

Here's the pictures and a link to a short video I took of the whole tank.

Also, if anyone can help, I believe my snails have some calcium deficency going on... The Ramshorns especially. I'm not sure why. There was an uncountable number of dead shells on the bottom of the tank that I picked up during my trimming...

And, in the video, do you see the color on the green/purple/red/orange guppy! It is amazing! I tried to get him in a picture but he was too busy chasing the orange/blue one...

Ahaha. I love your journal. Subscribing! Nerites do need full salt in order for their babies to survive. Good luck! Those white eggs do get pesky though! I personally love red ramshorns myself. But nerites are awesome too!

I love the growth of your plants. Wish mine was like that! I see you have Tons of tanks in your signature. It came off that you were a beginner. Not really I suppose!

Only a beginner in the planted tanks, I suppose. And thank you so much. I woke up this morning and just watched my fish swimming around the plants. I really do wish that I had trimmed them back sooner. Now I have a gallon bucket of plants that I'm not sure what to do with... I think I'll try putting some in my 55 gallon near the side that gets the most light for now. They won't grow to fast but at least they won't die. My jar has taught me that.

I actually think I need to knock one of the tanks out. I would love to get a 29-40 gallon and combine my two 10 gallons. And, since you mentioned the Nerites, in my other 10 gallon tank I plan on breeding them. I just need to get a good supply of algae going and upgrade the tank to a full on salt water tank, put all five (do I still have five? Maybe I only have four now...) in there and see how it goes. Hopefully the mollies don't eat the babies... The mollies are, actually, both my pet and feeder fish for my painted turtle in another tank. Anyway, enough about those tanks.

If you try the nerite plan, try breeding amanos! They are cool little shrimps. Mollies do good with salt. They drop fry pretty often and then you end up not knowing what to do with them! Or in your case, you do xD

If you have any extras go to the ROAK thread or the Classifieds. You can get some extra cash to further fund your aquariums. Also go to your location forum for local sales/trades. Good luck!

Bump: Oh and try to use flash for guppy and all fish pics if theyre fast. Works for me!

I've always wanted amanos. Maybe I'll try to get some from the same place I got the Nerites. I was going to do a large buy off one of the online stores but I couldn't afford the large shipping prices... Thanks for the suggestion.
