My roommate put two bags of Onyx Sand in his 20-gallon long about a week ago, and it STILL hasn't cleared up! His water is hazy and will not completely clear up no matter what. Is this normal for Onyx Sand? How long will it take for his tank to clear?

Sounds just like the experience I had. His only hope is to break down the tank and use the paint filter method to really rinse the Onyx well. My tank looked like I had filled it with a combination of mild and grey paint.

What is the paint filter method?

I used a paint seive bag from HD or Lowe's, forget which, and took me about 1 minute per bagful in a 5g bucket of rinsing to get the fines out. The fines look like grey mud- much more fine than Flourite, IME. The bags are just a fine mesh. This may be what Rex used also.

Yep. You get a paint filter, I like the ones that fit over a 5 gallon bucket and you dump the stuff in there and rinse it. You keep most of the fines but wash all the dust off.

I put a bag in my ten gallon tank about a month ago, mixed with the bag of black gravel I already had in there. It was a b*tch to rinse but I managed, in a big pot, lots of water changes, stirring and dumping and refilling. I did about a third of the bag at a time and it took me about 15 minutes to finish it all. Had a little cloudiness in the tank (I didn't pour over a saucer), which cleared up by the next morning. Personally, I'd be willing to pay a few bucks extra if they'd rinse the damn stuff thoroughly at the factory and dry it out again before bagging it up. Oh well.

Good luck
