Question

Fertiliser Opinions Help!

Hey, I was wondering what most people do for fertilisation when using miracle gro potting mix substrate?

I have some SeaChem Flourish that I use but I would rather do root ferts.

What does everyone use? Seems a lot of people do diy. I wouldn't mind that as long as I had a massive batch and all the materials.

However, I work at a local Bunnings and I wouldn't mind buying something from there either. They stock Osmocote and I was going to use the Osmocote Plus but that's obviously been discontinued now. Is there any alternative?

The commercial ferts all seem to lack some nutrients or have some 'catch' as well. Except the small companies are ok.

I was also planning on maybe using some root ferts in my turtle tank as well, but that's all white sand and has a fairly high chance of being ripped up, is there anything that won't make the sand dirty?

There really isn't a substitute for osmoscote plus for root tabs. Go around your city to farm supply stores and nurseries and find some. It hasnt been discontinued that long so its not that hard to find. Or buy premade O+ tabs off of a forum member here.

Otherwise you could try the dynamite red label or mix your own out of dry ferts and mexican pottery clay.

You don't need to use root tabs with dirt for a year or so. Then you can replenish it with some tabs. If you are dosing the water column it can go longer than a year. I would not add root tabs in a tank where I knew they would get torn up, they can release a lot of nitrates and or ammonia and be harmful to inhabitants.
