no aquasoil, just powersand?

So i was recently reading up in the nature aquarium books by takashi amano and noticed, none of them used aquasoil, just powersand with "large grain sand on top. i was wondering if i used powersand special capped with sand, if my plants would grow well or grow at all, i decided to ask you people before i go and screw myself over with a bag of powersand and no aquasoil . so go ahead and and talk to me about this stuff, i got two months.

It was probably before he even made Aquasoil.

Why would you choose not to use a product so beneficial to your tank? Cutting corners often leads to problems.

Then why not just use lava rock and spend the savings on fertilizers?

+1.

the other option would be to make your own mineralized top soil, I have a rice paddies all around me, so I just dig a buck full and then rinse through a 1/8" metal screen into a wheelbarrow, then allow it to settle, then decant the water off, then allow it to dry to clay like paste, then use that and sand over top.

Pretty identical to ADA aqua soil, except for the price. Makes a bit more messing if you move and uproot plants than ADA AS, but that's what you get for 40$ a bag vs free and some time/labor. Plants do not care, but you might.

Yes you can. Only the richest of us have the best of the best and the hobby itself can become unpleasurable if we focus only on the best of the best because we dont' have the time or money for it. Fertilize your water column; you will be good-to-go.

You DO NOT NEED aquasoil. I have used PFS and now River Sand and I'm very confident.

As far as I know, most wild aquatic plants don't grow in aquasoil

Root tabs (O+) under eco complete would work well, and is affordable. And water column dosing like the person above mentioned.

That's completely absurd.
