At least in ponds. I was at my local pet shop that also does a whole lot of business selling pond equipment and supplies. They were stuffing mesh bags with straw and I thought that was kind of strange. They told me it helps control algae in ponds. Does anybody have any first hand experience with it. This site claim one inch of straw per gallon works.

I've not tried it, but I recalled recaing somthing about it at the skeptical aquarist (scroll down near the bottom). He provides many links too including the APD archive at the krib, which has a few first hand accounts.

Lots of ideas but nobody really knows what is happening. There is a lot of study by universities on this issue but I'm not sure they are doing good science. Until somebody sorts out the cause and effect and understands why it works in some instances and not in others there is no way of knowing if it will help you. I'm not sure I'm ready to stuff some in my filter now.
