I also post at The Loach Forum where there are many advocates for using salt both to keep the tank healthy and to fight Ich and other "diseases." But most of these people don't have live plants.

I can't find much of anything on using salt in a planted tank. Could someone please point me in the right direction? (Most text I have read on using salt seems to ignore the issue of live plants.)

Thanks, Peter:sad:

Why do you want to add salt ?
Unless you are keeping Cichlids you have no need for salt .
Good water quality and a good balance in an aquarium are what prevent disease bro.

I agree... and I don't want to use salt. I'm just trying to learn about its use because its use has so many advocates.

I posted here to learn about its use where live plants are concerned. Perhaps the answer is that it shouldn't be used where live plants are concerned. ???

If it is for a short time period (like for treating ich) and you don't have any delicate plants, then the salt should be fine. But even for a short time salt could wipe out some delicate plants and mess stuff up.

I added a little bit of salt once (1 teaspoon for every 20ltrs) and my plants did not like it, it took about 2 months for them to rcover so I donīt recommend it.
