I scored tonight on them! Found them at...are you ready for this?? the chain store..you know the one. I have scoured every lfs in town only to find none. Then I heard that this one had them. They do..and at a wonderful price....$1.49 ea!! They are the real thing too. I have studied every pic I could find on them and read every article. the barbels are right and the stripe is right on into the tail. So hit up your local mart store! They were in the tank with the ottos.

O got six of them and just found one dead. Six was probably more than I needed anyway. They were all the way on the other side of town so I don't think I will be returning it for $1.49. It would take me more gas than that.

Yeah, in another post around here about SAE's and there rarity + high cost, I said I found them at Petsmart for about 1.50 and every thought I was crazy and that they were just otos. Eventually I thought I must have been mistaken too and never bought any. Now they don't have them anymore!

Petsmart gets some kind of opportunity buys on occasion, so you might see just about anything surprising in there on a visit. The thing is, those are one-time buys, so forget it if you miss it. Also, they kill more fish at the one here than the rest of the lfs's put together, I think.

I'm lucky I guess in that there are 3 within 15 minutes of me. the one I found the sae's at is about 40 min. Usually all the have is the usual stuff although I did find one lone panda cory once. One of them now has curviceps and rams that look really good, oh and I found bristlenose pl*cos for 3.49 ea, non eof the local mom and pops have had anything but really $$ ones that get huge or clowns(have one that I never see). I may visit this one farther from me more often though. Their tanks looked really well kept.

ive seen them at petsmart a alot of times. but alot of times they are the wrong fish. or really close looking fish or somtimes the fins will turn yellow on ya, got two false ones that way. since they are really small and scared in the tank there color fades. but the false ones really look so much more colorful, nice red and yellow marking. But yea these things look real. probably got a good shipment in.
yea they occasionally have great opertunity buys. bichers for 5 bucks when everyone is selling for over 20 at times. hell my LFS bought all the bichers at petsmart one time and sells them for 8 bucks now. also how i got my chubby plec

all me ghost shrimp are gone though so I can't say about them. The shrimp jumped ship to get away from the angels and kribs trying to eat them. I still find one every so often dried up somewhere. That's why i wanted these so much. No way am I going to pay $5- $10 for a shrimp that someone is going to eat, and that's what the only store that had these were charging. Law of supply and demand I guess.

Petsmart here in town were selling them as "Siamese Fying Foxes"...
$1.49 each. Got 4. Hard to tell their true identity now at home. They appear to be SAEs: No 2nd stripe above the black one. 2 barbels. Clear fins. No suckermouth. But: Only 1 has black stripe going into the tail. The others it appears to stop or is so light you cant see. I wonder if "Siamese Flying Fox" means, "FFs, SAEs, and FSAEs" cross-breed. |

I'd bet the paycheck they were the real deal, pedietz. The reason I say that is, I just got back from our local Petsmart and that's what they had- it was an opportunity buy, and the name listed was algae-eating shark, $1.49 ea. So I picked up a trio just cause I could.
Whatever the common name, these were Crossocheilus siamensis. The "one".

I got some at PetSmart today too!
They were labeled Shark Alge Eaters.. But I saw a thread earlier today that had detailed the differences between SAE, flying fox, and chinese alge eaters. THese are the real deal!

The SAEs ate my bleach dipped and Hydrogen Peroxide dipped hair algae... Finally it's gone.
I didnt dip my Val, so it still has the green kind. Now if only they'd swim clear up high to eat it.... |
