Are the published Rena Filstar GPH correct or is this the GPH with no media?
I ask because my Double Helix UV needs between 100 and 200 GPH to work effectivly. The XP1 pumps 250 GPH and the XP2 pumps 300 GPH. I know I've heard this debated and discussed but if I recall only Eheim is publishing GPH with media. If the XP1 is really moving 250 GPH I would not be able to use this with my UV.

I'd get the XP2 simply because you get an extra media basket. Theres a butterfly valve that comes with it that you can use to slow down the flow a little or you can tee it off like you said. You may not need to do either, but at least you have the options.

Gregg - at no head means the pump has no hose attached and is not pumping upwards....
Picture a pump on the floor and the top of your tank is 5 feet of the floor then the pump is got 5 feet of head to pump... it's not a technical explanation but..... that's as good as I can get

Keep in mind that "head" means very different things for powerheads and canister filters. Powerheads which can be used to pump water out of a sump, or up a waterfall, bear the full weight of the water. Canister filters are closed systems, the inflowing water equalizes the pressure of the outflowing water. If you turn them off the water just stops flowing, but they don't have to push it up a few feet against gravity. Thats why you don't see ratings on canister filters "at 3 feet head" etc.

No, head is not the distance that the pump must lift the water.
Head is almost like resistance. It is based on flow velocity, the fluid used, the temp of the fluid, and the coefficent of friction of the object the liquid is running through. (I work in the hot water industry, I design radiantly heated floors). 0 ft of head usually occurs when the water leave the pump immediately direct to the open. You can have 10 ft of head after having 130 deg water running through 280 ft of pipe. Doesn't matter if it goes straight up 5 ft or 50 ft. Sorry, it's the only technical data i've been able to contribute to this board.

You are correct. But for this application head is the distance we are raising the water.

People say that putting a DIY CO2 reactor on the output side of the Rena Filster loses a lot of water "umphh"...
So if the larger XP flow is too strong, adding the CO2 reactor may be just the thing needed... |
