Now I am thinking this may just be a diatom outbreak, instead of a red algae. Sort of a "duh" moment... Its been a long while since I started a tank from near scratch and of course I never really got a good diatom burst in here. So I better start re catching the Otos from my 65 gallon. It wipes off slimy like soft brown diatoms do. I certainly hope its just the standard diatom outbreak.

OK, Its been about a month since I re-started the tank and a bit over three weeks since the first picture . No scape here, just growing some plants for now. I think by adding 9 Otos and a little time, this diatom algae bloom is diminishing. Here are a couple quick shots.

Lots of plant growths. I have had to trim some stems pretty hard like the Stargrass and the Largarosiphon madegascarensis on the right since they are growing so fast. It needs another trim already. I am dosing EI with a Wasserpest type auto setup using a Aquarium Systems 606 pump and cereal container to hold three weeks worth of ferts. The only fert I am adding manually is PO4 at present.

I also had to cut the Cyperus helferi back hard with diatoms on it, prior to adding the Otocinclus. But those little guys are keeping it clean now. The Cyperus seems to be their favorite. For a while the diatoms were getting really bad, but its quickly improving now.

And my new $15 triple red! He has three ladies to hang with.

A closer look at midtank with the Rainbows and Black Neons... My two medium sized Clown loaches and Corys love to hang under the root burl. I also added some nice narrow leaf java and a few Crypt wendtii sp. "Green Geko" from Greenisgood. Thanks Donna! And a few other odds and ends. Just trying to get the tank to balance. I think its almost there. That's pearling on the fissidens and moss on the Manzanita centerpiece.

The substrate before washing...

Washing method and storing method while I waited out the bleach prior to restart. I suppose I have this journal backwards...LOL

And to steal a pic from another thread - my new baby Boesemani fry (I think??). Really tiny and way over sharpened pic to show its finnage. It sure looks like Rainbowfish to me. Maybe three weeks old and 3/8 inch long. And it hatched by accident in my Cherry Shrimp tank. It swims very fast too and loves the current from an XP2 - (the current is bounced off the back glass)

Great job, Bob. So you went back to flourite I see. Makes me apprehensive to start up the AS. The H balsamica will survive a bleach dip usually by shooting new green shoots off of the main stem. Just keep pruning. Also, congrats on your fry...it def looks like a rainbow

Thanks Geoff and Lynn. Also, I forgot to add a new picture I took of my 65 gallon last night. This is primarily a growout tank. The Crinum calemestratum has taken off. The little red is where I cut a flower off in the middle. Its having baby Crinums so it must be kind of happy. I'll probably trade it, but I'm enjoying it for now. But its spindle leaves sure makes catching fish a pain.

Thanks everyone, I appreciate it.
Vollphann, the fish (from my 65 gallon) in the top right third with some yellow on it is an Apistogramma Borelli. I have two of them in there. Both locally bred and he is pretty young, but his color is starting to really come out!

Coming along very nicely Bob! Fissidens look happy. I bet you can't wait to see the last of the diatoms. Mine are JUST about on their way out.

Thanks Sergio, Yeah I really will be glad when diatoms are a thing of the past. The Otos are keeping the Cyperus helferi sparkling clean, but not cleaning some others. Might have two types going. But all is OK!

I have a tip for rinseing large amounts of substrate, paint cleaner bags (sold at most paint stores) work very well as the mesh is fine, and you can do up to 20 lbs at a time.

A few changes. But first, I got a say I am so excited that this tank has pretty much balanced out in the last week. All that Lagarosiphon madagascariensis and Stargrass and Egeria has paid off big by wiping out most of all algae. So, taking a chance here and knocking on wood...

I've pulled all the L. madagascarensis and Egeria out, and most of the Stargrass - to give some hidden Crypts wendtii green and C. wendtii sp. "Green Geko" a chance at light. I'll keep the Cyperus helferi on both back corners. Also, I have added a couple of Lobelia (small form) and put a few more of some recently acquired Rotala sp. "colorata" I got from Bigstick. The Rotala is mixed in with a few Bacopa and one spring of E. stellata I had laying around.

The plan is to soon pull out the Stargrass which I just moved to the back for now. And ultimately to have either Hygrophila balsamica or Hygrophila sp. "Pantanal wavy" in the background( possibly both, but probably one or the other).
Right now you can see the Hygrophila sp. "Pantanal wavy" is starting to grow fast behind the Manzanita wood. Also the downoi is kicking in gear again. And there are two big sprigs of H. balsalmica down low in the back getting ready to rocket up. But the best news is the Diatoms are toast, or almost toast thanks to the Otos - and since the tank is balancing! Yeah! I am SO glad. And I have become a full believer in EI dosing.

Here are a couple of pictures of the tank. I pulled all the stargrass out and have Rotalla colorata and a few other stems going well now. The Hygrophila sp. "Pantanal Wavy" is starting to kick in gear in the middle. And some of the moss and fissidens is spreading on the Manzanita. There is some pretty bad algae on the Anubias, but I'm hoping once its not under full light it will do better. Plus it keeps floating up and I forgot to push it back down before snapping these pics.

Behind and slightly above the most right Turquoise Rainbow are a couple starts of Hygrophila balsamica which should fill and cover the right center back and shade the anubias along with the Pantanal wavy. You can see one of that plant on its way up, right above that blue fish's head in this first pic.

Wide picture of full tank. The Downoi is filling in pretty nice in the foregrown and I added one more Eriocaulon cinereum too. Still waiting on some Crypts to come into growth in the fore/midground.
