Bear with me please, I am a total newbie at planted tanks.

Yesterday my sweetie and I purchased a 29 gallon Top Fin tank at Petsmart. I want to plant this tank very badly, but the provided bulb is only 20 watts, which is obviously not anywhere near enough from what I've read.

The bulb provided is 28", and F18T8, whatever that means. I do know that it has 2 pins, and is similar (though not same brand) to this bulb http://www.bulbman.com/index.asp?Pag...amp;ProdID=105 .

Can I get a VHO bulb or something else with higher wattage to fit into my existing hood? I'm looking at all these bulb pages, and I really just don't understand the different numbers and things, so I'm having difficulty being able to tell what I can and can't do.

I don't want to have to build a whole new canopy if I don't have to. I just really need to know where to start with this. Help me?

It's an 18 watt bulb. You could get a VHO bulb but you would also have to replace the ballast. What you should do is go to www.ahsupply.com and get a 55 watt upgrade kit. You can put that right into your current strip light and you will be set.

Rex,

Thanks for your reply. Not only was it helpful, but the link to a beginning tank in your signature was quite helpful as well. I think I can actually do this!
