Some Thoughts on CFLs and Mounting

A pic of my 10 gallon tank with a 10-watt and a 16-watt cfls in "Breeder" dome reflectors is below.

I have thought a lot about how to mount CFLs on my tank. I started off just by getting a glass top and placing the dome reflectors on it. But when it's time to work on the tank, it's a big production to get the top and the reflectors off the tank and clamping a reflector to get some light.

Besides, the tank top solution is not flexible as far as height goes. I think hanging the reflectors above the tank is a much better solution. However, I am a renter and I can't go into the ceiling.

I have looked at some non-ceiling hanging schemes, in fact there is one which looks good that you can buy. It is being sold for use in reptile tanks. I also liked the idea someone had of putting shelf mountings on the wall over the tank and using that to hang the lights.

I have been thinking again tonight and I think I can mount the shelf mountings on a board and use that to hang the lights over my aquarium. I will also build in a way to raise the lights up to a pre-set height so I can get into the tank easily.

I wish there was more information about CFLs, like the wattages of CFLs sold that would work on aquariums, and also PAR per inch of aquarium height for one of the CFLs which would allow people to extrapolate to their aquarium's height. There could be a calculator in XHTML or in a spreadsheet to make it easier for people.

Some of this data may be available and I may have missed it.

Thanks for listening.
Steven

Have you taken a look at the sticky?

In particular, this thread may be of use to you (particularly Figure 6 and 7)

Hi

I was a renter and did not fear to make one or 2 holes in the ceiling, no big deal. Never have problems with such minor modifications. You can plast and paint when leaving.

Hanging CFLs is a great solution that I did use.

Michel.

Thanks Anthony. I wrote down some numbers but they didn't relate to each other as I expected. I think I will have to go find the formula for light/ft and use that, possibly go to the formula for PAR as well. It's amazing that a few inches change produces such a big change in PAR value.

You can look up my 10g journal (sorry, on a phone atm) to see what I used and what I grew.

Basically, a ZooMed Large Stand + ZooMed double deep dome light, ~$50 from Amazon. Hope this helps a bit.
