Question

Help with shrimp identification?

I picked up these shrimp today from my LFS. They were labelled "Navy Blue Caridina".

I've been trying to identify what they actually are for a few hours now, but they don't have strong striping like Blue Tigers or Blue Bees should have. Am I just comparing them to much higher grade examples of these species?

Could these just be low grade blue cherry shrimp?

Ask your LFS if they order from SunPet. They have been selling "Navy Blue Shrimp" recently and they don't even have the slightest clue what they really are. Based on the color alone, I would guess blue diamond (which don't breed true), or a darker blue velvet (which should breed true).

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll have to look at them closer.

I did specifically ask the LFS (owner's daughter actually, owner wasn't there) because I was a bit suspicious. She told me they got them from a local breeder here in NJ and that the breeder only gave them the name they had labelled there (Navy Blue Cardinia - yes, it was mis-spelled too ). Apparently the breeder sells them multiple species, but this is the first time he's sold them these.

After looking at them for a bit, I'd have to agree with your assessment wicca, though either of those would have been nice for the price I got them for.

My main concern is my placement for them, since I had been planning on putting them in my cherry breeding tank, but with the species still fuzzy, I'm worried they might be neos

Thanks for the suggestion shrimpo. I had looked at these earlier but had written them off as almost all of the ones I had seen were a single-shade blue without much variation except a little more darkness lower in the body and back of the head.

Though, when you mentioned this, I searched again and looked further down and found this, which, while darker and more solidly colored, seems to be the closest match I've seen yet.

As far as size goes, they seem to be roughly on par with my ~2 month old cherries.

Most look like carbons to me from your first picture. One in the pic looks brownish though, and carbons don't throw brownish... does look neo though and not card

My LFS store was selling "Navy Blues" awhile ago too, and I had them look up the species (genus) which their paperwork said was Neo. (They didn't know, or have any idea why I would care.)

Cmiiw
If neo caridina
Maybe Variant of carbon rili or rili

Note: i could be wrong, it is based on local name and grade, seller where i buy these shrimp could be wrong with the name

Above less spot on the middle
Bottom more spot, later cover the entire body

Pic
