Not really a laughing matter here, but I've got to snicker at myself.

I purchased a Coralife Aqualight 96w 50/50 on Saturday for my 25gal below. I noticed it was generating some excess heat (warmed the water 2 degrees) Saturday afternoon so on Sunday I went back to my LFS for some mounting legs to get it off the glass and bought a timer (set it up for 12 hour light & darkness).

Well, last night I got home from work after a wonderfully stressful day and checked on my tank. The ATI stick on thermometer was pegged at 84F, as high as it goes. I know drastic temp changes are a bad thing but my Botia Dario's looked really bad so I put a few ice cubes in there after I turned the light off.

I got the temp down to about 81F and my Dario's became active again. The rest of the fish didn't seem to mind the heat so much, but it was surely too high.

So, I went and actually did the calculations for my tank. Turns out I'm pushing 3.86 watts per gallon.

I've set my timer to run a shorter day for the moment.

Why a 50/50 bulb? You'd get more (plant) usable light from a daylight bulb.

Aquascape? I'm a crypt farmer.

It's a fine line between fishing and standing on the shore looking like an idiot.

That IS an aquascape, it's titled "The Vacant Lot".

Those 96 watters sure are some serious bulbs and produce serious heat - but Sean is right - the 50% Actinic side is producing little to no light that plants can use.

Well, that's just what they had at my LFS. They had three of these fixtures there and they were all 50/50s.

Anything would have been a good step up from my lil' 20watt 12" strip i had on there before. Course it seems I overdid it.

I guess it's an excuse to buy a bigger 36" tank so I can use it on there instead. You know, silver lining and all.
