I've got 2 decent FSs within 45 minutes and I try to support them as much as I can. Most of the staff in either knows about most of their products. I personally hate buying online. I like the interaction. Plus if something goes awry I have some one I can talk to about it instead of an email that may, or may not get answered.
No, no -- don't get me wrong. I'll go out of my way to support local a local business, especially a LFS, (no mercy for franchises, of course) BUT I will price check items that seem rediculously inflated. Maybe it's just the ones I frequent, but I'm talking serious markup, such as an API nitrate kit for something like $13, $14?!? I can get the master kit for $20 including 2 day shipping online, why bother? Maybe it's just because they're a few miles from Petcos and Petsmarts they think it's justifiable, I don't know.

--Oh, and when I have trouble with it... I come here. lol

I know one that you're speaking about but what is the other one ?

-----

My likes:
  • LFS allows me to pick my own plants and allows me to check them over before deciding to purchase (compared to big stores who just grab and drop)
  • I've made some good friendships at some of the LFS
  • LFS who are knowledgeable about local organizatiosn
Dislikes:
  • Tanks which you know haven't been maintained properly in months (why wouldnt' you just hire someone who loves tanks and loves working with them?!)
  • Unknowledgable staff members (there are some)
  • There's a store in Pasco County who will attempt to sell HAIR ALGAE as java moss (yes I'm serious and yes I've been into that store two different times and two different sales people attempted this)
  • Sick fish (a lot of local stores have sick fish and just leave them in there instead of trying to treat them)
  • Stores with ZERO plant knowledge but they sell plants
  • Stores who sell emersed plants as submerged plants

LIKES:
FINDING NEW FISH AND SUPPLIES
Talking to other fish tank lovers
The environment

DISLIKES: I have more of these
Neglected tanks. Especially if it concerns fish health.
Employees who don't know what they're doing or don't care about the fish they're handling
Lack of selection or bad selection
Really high prices....

I only have to LFS within an hour of me and each place only has ONE guy that knows what he's doing and actually cares about the hobby. So its frustrating from my standpoint....though I will support the local business when I can. But I only make purchases when the good employees are there haha

I have to say that several times at a few of my lfs I've felt like the service has been less than optimal based on me being female. I've seen male customers in there get very different service. That's enough to make me order online.

Amen to that. I get the same thing being on the selling end. I get "Is this your dad's shop?"
Very uncool

Healthy plants/fish/shrimp. I could care less about cheap pricing. A shop like this dealing in freshwater is rare. The best example that is local to me is Nature Aquarium in Santa Monica. It's an ADA shop and the guy that runs it keeps everything looking amazing. He QT's all the new fish and won't even sell them until they are ready.

Hmmm, I wonder if I've been assuming this was a SW thing when it's not.

I was in your shop today, before it opened. Your shop rocks. You should be proud. Any Florida residents willing to drive an hour or more need to check out Darkwater Aquatics. Worth the drive! Keep it up.
