I guess a tank crash is as good of a time as any to start a new journal!

I'll start off with a link to my old journal as my previous adventures are all logged there. http://www.plantedtank.net/forums/sh...d.php?t=164271

For various reasons, I made the decision to downgrade to a 10 gallon tank in a new location of the house. I figured that moving over the current filter, media and all, would make for an effortless and instant cycle.

WRONG!

After doing some very basic and tentative scaping on Friday night, I let loose a bunch of ghost shrimp while I waited overnight to make sure that things were stable. Yesterday, I undertook the task of catching all seven of my kuhli loaches to move over to their new home. Greatly underestimated that chore.

They are adjusting slowly, as expected, since the plant growth is not nearly thick enough for them to feel comfortable yet. Hopefully soon!

I went to check water parameters today and knocked all of the tubes over in shock after I read the results. Ammonia at 2 ppm and nitrites at 5 ppm! (nitrates 40 ppm). WHAT?! How?!

90% water change. Used a half cap of Prime for the water change and let everything settle until later tonight when I tested again. Ammonia at 0, but nitrites at 1 ppm. Dosed one full cap of Prime (the last of the bottle!) to buffer the nitrites until tomorrow when I'll do another water change after I go out for another bottle of Prime and probably a bottle of SafeStart.

This will be fun.

Oh, and I can't forget the first picture!

Almost the entire scape is tentative, except what my "helper" is blocking, which is a lava stone cave with baby water sprite wrapping around the back with some pygmy chain sword (still need confirmation on that ID) in front.

Everything else just "is where it is" until it grows in a bit and I get some inspiration.

Looks like a nice start!

Prime can safely be dosed up to 5x the recommended amount. 1 capful treats 50 gallons, so you are within the safe limit technically. good luck with the cycle! Hopefully it will recover quickly

Yes, I've always gone by the directions on the bottle!

Loaches would no doubt appreciate the flow from Aquaclear 70 on ten gal, but would be way too much movement for many fishes with exception of perhap's White cloud mountain minnow.
I use Aquaclear 70 on 29 gal and it is a bit too much flow for the cardinal tetra's but the juvie bristlenose love it.

Surprisingly, it isn't as bad as I thought it would be, but you are correct! I have an AC 50 waiting in the wings, pending a replacement impeller.

To save on the water conditioner you could buy some from LNT.com. They are cheaper there and there is no shipping charge.

I am surprised that you went down on the size of your tank. I was going to downgrade from a 29G to 20G and just couldn't do it. Thus now have a 20G and 29G tank.

Petco was the cheapest coming in at 8.99, surprisingly. I normally don't shop at the big-box stores, but I couldn't wait for anything online to ship.

I had been contemplating the downgrade for quite some time. You see, I have ridiculously short arms and reaching into my 29 was getting to be a chore. In all honesty, I can see myself going for a 20 long in a few months. There's enough room left and I'll still be able to reach in!

I like the new look. It should grow in nicely. I also like the "helper" (mine are more "managers" than "helpers"). I just noticed you're only about an hour from me. Where do you normally go to get your plants and fish? There's nothing around out where I am.

Thanks! It's not much of a "look" yet, but we'll see!

My helpers are excited about the new location of the tank. In case anyone ever wondered how many cats it takes to do a water change, the answer is three. However, it only takes one to barrel through a line of test tubes and spill chemicals all over the place.

We do live close! I'm just outside the middle of nowhere, so I get most of everything online. Sometimes I'll luck out and be able to drive for a bit less than the cost and hassle of shipping, though. I think I drove two hours for my kuhli loaches.
