Hello,
I am new to these forums and new to planted tanks. I have a 55 gallon standard tank (48*12*18) that I am converting from a Central American Cichlid tank to a South American tank. I am unsure of what the best combination of bulbs would be.

My setup will be as follows:

Eheim 2026
3 inches of Flourite
Flourish and Flourish Iron
Pressurized CO2 (5 lb.)
DIY forced reactor

I am debating between getting a fixture with 2 55 or 3 55's cf from AH Supply or a similar fixture from Coralife. I am tempted to go with a 3 55 AH Supply combo but wonder if it is too much light for a beginner like myself (hose reflectors look absolutely monstrous).

As far as firtilization is concerned, should I have a daily firtilizer as well like Dupla 24 or something similar?

At Big Al's they have the Eheim 2026 for $149.99 which seems like a good deal from what I have seen elsewhere, although they have a Fluval 404 for 89.99. Is the Eheim really worth it?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Happy New Year,
Aaron

My 2cents, go with the 3 55watt kit from AH... I perfer Rena Filstar canisters. A x-2 or x-3 would work nice on that tank... As far as fertilizer you will need a trace fert and N.P.K... However I would not add anything to the tank as far as ferts are concerned until you know what the current levels are and what are needed.

I think it is better if you give a week or two before starting fertilizations.

Thanks for the advice. Would any of you know of a good test kit bundle (nitrates, hardness, co2, iron, ext.) for a planted tank? The ones that are color coded are not nearly as accurate as I would prefer.

I use Wardley Midrange pH test, and Tetra kH/THCA kit, with that you can calculate CO2.

The Aquarium Pharmeceuticals (AP) Nitrate test kit is nice. I haven't found a phosphate test kit I liked. Seachem is hard to read and Hagen is worse. I'm going to try a RedSea PO4 kit next.
Don't bother with Iron test kits. They aren't reliable.

Aaron,

What kind of cichlids do you have in mind? My JD moves the gravel all over in my unplanted 29.

I'm giving my cichlids away (2 jack dempsey males 7") as well as a catfish that I have been unable to identify. I will be putting several Apistogramma Caucatuoids (Cockatoo Dwarf Cichlids) or Rams in my new arrangement as well as my 11 Cardinal tetras and 5 to 10 SAEs. Both of those cichlids grow to an adult size of about 3" for males and 2" for females. I definately would not be able to keep my Dempseys in a planted tank as they constantly churn up the gravel.

Thanks for takin' the time,

Aaron

I wish I could take them, but I am at full capacity at the moment.

The dominant one is one of the most gorgeous fish I have seen anywhere, not to mention the most interesting. Keeping them well fed with guppies and frozen bloodworms has really brought out their colors. If anyone is interested feel free to e-mail me at jsedgwick@wideopenwest.com

That Eheim 2026 Pro II canister you are thinking about is one of the best canister filters on the market if you ask me!

Anyone have any suggestions of how I would set up the AH Supply fixture (3 55 watt bulbs) so that I would have the best coverage?

It depends on if you want a carpet or a red stem plant overstory. How do you want your tank to look? What do you think you'd like to grow?
