Well I just picked up a 29G tank.

I got it from Petco's $1 per gallon, and now I will slowly build it up and I wanted to have some input from the community, I will get a stand first.

Then I was wondering what kind of lighting system I should go with, I do want medium to high light.

So I hope I get some helpful advice, I just want to be able to compare different lighting systems that different people use.

Also don't know if I want a glass top, or a full hood, so let the ideas begin.

I think you should really consider an LED fixture! They don't run as hot, last longer, and use less electricity. You can also have a manual dimmer to fine tune your light to be balanced with ferts and CO2 (assuming you'll be using CO2 with high light).
Maybe check out Build My LED, they have reasonable prices...I ordered a custom designed light from them and they have been very very helpful!

I find a glass top more appealing (it also offers some options with lighting that you wouldn't necessarily have with a hood), but its personal preference really!

What are your plans for substrate and filtering?

I also prefer glass tops so that's a keeper, and I will look into the LED'S I'm glad you didn't mention finnex I kind of hate them.

And I was thinking of trying to go with dirt, since I have a new bag of miracle grow just sitting around, but I will have to do some research on how to do it.

Filter, not sure yet but I would like a eheim or something similar, its open to suggestions as well.

Well I think the lights are decided as well as the top, it will be a glass top with a 30 inch planted aquarium light by build my LED.

Now I have to figure out how many I need.

Thanks to tropical for the heads up.

Check out their Facebook page, they posted a link to a custom 5000k spectrum light that mimics the colors of fluorescent. It offers excellent par levels too!

Their general planted tank light works very well too though...

Yeah I just talked to them about what the difference was between the two lights.

Have you decided on what arrangement you're going to go with?

Not really I might do both!
One on each glass panel at 90, but I'm not sure perhaps a custom one?

Lighting is a pain :-(

Well I just made a stand for the tank, I got it sanded down and I will be picking up some paint later today.

I have yet to make the doors, but once I figure out what moulding my wife likes I can make them.

You're right. That IS quite costly. But if you calculate the whole cost of running a light for a year, you will see the difference.
You save a LOT of electricity.
You dont have to keep changing the tubes of T5HO
You dont worry about heat

Considering all these points, its cheaper in the long run

I just got home from a long day of errands, but I'm so determined to get at least one coat of paint on it, that I will probably be up late tonight.
