Reddish Blyxa J. Starting to Flower

weeeeee so happy!!!! Didnt expect this at all.

Im running two T8 fixtures giving me 2.88 watts/gallon (I know it only applies to T12s) and Ive been dosing crap load of nutrients. Since my mixtures are messed up, I decided to double dose them. Its been 2 weeks and my blyxa are turning more and more red. The pics suck but its the best I could do.

Should I cut off the flowers afterwards? I know its taking alot of nutrients and energy to do this, I hope it stays fine. Ill be dosing alot to make sure.

Have you seen a blyxa this red before? Or is it photo edited? Man Id love to get that colour, link below (3rd pic)

Very nice and successfull, how much T8 you run and what are the dimensions of your tank?

Can you also share if you use CO2 or not, liquid carbon like excel or metricide, etc.

Thank you,

My blyxa went red like that in my old 75. Hated it lol. I added it originally because it's color matched the Downoi closely, then it goes and changes on me! :-P

Nice job on the flowers though. Mine never sent out flowers no matter how fast they were growing.

Keep us updated because one of my Blyxa are doing the same thing. Funny though. I got 10 stems maybe a week ago and planted them in my low tech dirt tank, dosing with excel and light EI. The first day I left my light on, medium high to high intensity, for 10 hours. I did that for 2 days because I wanted to jump start the plants. 3 to 4 days later, I noticed the little pod shooting out from one of my stems. However, I have 10 in my low tech dirt tank but only one stem is shooting one pod. The tank was only setup for 2 weeks so far.

Thank you,

Thank you everyone!!!

Its a 45 gal long. 48" x 12" width and 15" from lights to gravel. Im running 2 shop lights, 4 bulbs. I believe they are 32 watt bulbs, 6400k.

I have a ph co2 controller so my ph is steady. The red parts are in direct light and medium to strong water flow.

I love the dark green colours for the redish is new, so I dont mind. I wanted to move the blyxa all the way to the right since Im replacing my powerhead with something less ugly. But since they are flowering, Im not sure if I should move.

DGH is soo annoying. I have to trim it every week and the fish net does not catch all the needles. Some spots have browned/died already, really high maintenance. I have HC floating around the tank, I wanted to start a carpet of that but the DGH took over.

Oh one more thing, 2 weeks ago I shifted lots of gravel and the blyxa ended up floating, only a few roots anchored it down. Its still kinda floating but has alot of roots going into the gravel.

High iron substrate + high lighting + high co2 seems to work well for me. Congrats on the flower!

Yessir it is. Currently the only real highlight of the tank. Hopefully everything else catches up.

Whoa! Thats serious! Unfortunately, soon after I made this topic I sold it. It was tooo big for my tank. I have two smaller ones now. One under high light is going red but some of the leaves are damaged. It might be due to me not dosing enough macro. Ive been dosing more of the iron recently. Lets see how much of an effect it has on the blyxa. Im loving your blyxa, such an eye catcher. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks! The reason why I thought id share was to show that the intense red coloration is possible. Best of luck growing it out again!

What kind of lighting do you use? I have really high lighting and while mine is copper colored I have never seen blyxa that red.

2 65W power compact fluorescents @ 6400K and 10,000K.
the tank is 8 gallons, and i suspect height might have something to do with it as well (it's about 6" from the lights)
