Canister questions.

I am looking into buying a canister filter. I don't have much to spend, I was wondering if I could use and Eheim Classic on my 55 gallon. I was also wondering if I have to worry about my tank emptying out onto the floor when using a canister. Also what is the outside diameter of the tubing? What additional accessories do I need to buy? Thanks.

I use a Rena XP-3 on my 55 gallon tank and it works great. The only way the tank will empty on to the floor when using a cannister filter is if a hose breaks or come free of the cannister filter or the cannister filter is not closed. Diameter of the tubing depends on the filter. A Filstar comes with everything you need to get you started.

As long as you connect everything up properly there isnt no worry of floods, a single classic canister maybe a bit to small for a 55
I use 2 classics (2213) on my 46 but its also heavily planted and its perfect.
Outside diameter of the classic 2213 is roughly 1/2" with the 12/16 hoses.

There are larger classic canisters other than 2213 also, but may not be for you if you are on a tight budget

I'd recommend a Magnum 350. Buy online for $73., $89.99 or the Magnum Pro is on sale now at That Fish Place for $99.99. My 350 has been chugging along for 4 years now with no mishaps or parts needing replacement.

The Magnum 350 IMHO has a very small media capacity for a 55 gallon tank. Also due to the small amount of surface area on the filters they clog very quickly. And from Big Al's you can get an XP-3 for $90. Much better deal than the 350 as it has a much larger media capacity and a higher flow rate.
