What does everybody think of the CO2 system seen here? You get a tank, regulator, and neeld valve for $99. Then all you have to do is order the tubing and a check valve and you'll be set. Would this be a good system to buy, or would I be better off getting a tank etc... locally?

Plus. Check out the post under vendor reviews. They're on pretty shaky ground. M3 used to be the cats meow, but somethings not right in "marine monster land" lately.

Hmmm. Looks like I'll have to find another source for my CO2 tubing and needle valve. Even if the CO2 system was a good deal, I don't think I'd get it... Thanks for the warning info!

I can remember at least one person who was thoroughly displeased with the service he recieved from this outfit. It seems they have lost all credibility since they were taken over by another company. :hehe:

Here's what I hope might save you some money if you're putting together a system from components...

I found a very good and very inexpensive needle valve ($8) at a model airplane store. I installed it in the hose line, right before the bubble counter. Take a sample of your tubing and explain to the folks at the model airplane store what you need.

The one I found had a hose barb on the input side that was threaded. I had to remove it and wrap some teflon tape around the threads to stop it from leaking. I also used some small wire ties to secure the CO2 tubing to the input and output ports. After that, it has worked very well with very fine control of the flow rate.... and very cheaply!

Head on over to www.clippard.com and find a distributor in your area. Get a MNV4-K2 needle valve. It comes with two hose barbs and works great. Cost is just about $11 and it's the same one sold elsewhere for much more money. If you don't have a distributor I will be more than happy to pick one up for you and mail it out.

rex,

seems to me somewhere along the line, someone mentioned there was a pita factor involved in setting up a co2 system from scratch. today, after several hours on the phone, i have confirmed this:hehe:

well, as you suggested, i had most success dealing with a home brew shop. $109 for a 10 lb tank, $79 for a regulator. before anyone doth protest, these are cdn funds. so it's pocket change for you south of the border types.

i would be interested (definately) in one of those MNV4-K2 needle valves. you are suggesting that it would fit any regulator?

i think it might be best to buy a needle valve, then take it over to the home brew place and let them hook it up. us health pro geek types had best leave these things to nobler men. a marine i ain't!

as an aside, just happened to be talking to a buddy of mine yesterday who recommeded the home brew shop. seems he had bought a brewing kit for christmas for, get this, his girlfriend. made me think of the episode where homer buys marj a bowling ball for their anniversary.

Well there are a couple of way to hook the needle valve into the regulator. One is to hook it to the regulator, which means you need a couple of adapters. One of which you must get from Clippard if you use their needle valve. The other is to run a hose barb from the regulator and then put that hose on one barb of the MNV4-K2 and the other barb with hose to the reactor. If you chose this method many times you can find what you need at the BORG.

BORG = Big Orange Retail Giant, aka Home Depot, but also used to describe Lowe's.

ahhh... i see the light. we actually have a home depot here now, but no lowe's as i know it.

the nearest distributor for the MNV4-K2 seems to be about a zillion miles away, but i'll see what i can do.

frustratingly, the inventory at home depots seems to vary, even in canada. i found that out when i was looking for a ballast.

regards, and thanks.
