ANSWER Blue Velvet & Blue Pearl Cross

Not long ago I decided to stumble into Shrimp Keeping, Windmilling all the Way! I started with Cherries, as we all do. Then moved on to 'pretty blue shrimp'. I decided to try my hand at Blue Pearl shrimp. I got some from a Local source and some from another source. Well thanks to Soothing's information, pointing it out to me. I had in fact mixed Blue Pearl and Blue Velvet shrimp. Well, I had no idea what they would do. No one did. so, I let them breed, took the adults out and here are the results some months later.

The slate color is gone from the now adults, While Blue Velvets babies are red when they are born, The Ones I have produced are now blue from when they are born and only get darker as they age. To the color of Blue Velvet. The Males are brighter blue, no slate coloring, almost to the blue of a female. The females are large. I have no seen any red coloring.
I am also breeding Blue Velvets (blue rilis) side by side for comparison. The rilis I have still have spots of red.

With the help of my friends and this community...Since I have made a new Hybrid...I get to name it. They will be called Azure. I'll have pictures up, in a while, once I clean the algae off the glass and find that darn camera!

Isn't it a great feeling getting to name your own strain? Great job!

Just curious but if there were males and females of both the pearl and velvet, how do you know that they cross bred and didnt breed with their own kind? or did I read wrong?

Well, I had a tank with both breeding. I took all the adults out to ensure that only the babies of the breeding remained. Then waited for those little guys to have little ones of their own for a few generations. If you also read back, I keep a tank of pure Velvets along side (not the same tank) to compare colors and variations. I culled all the adults to my 29 gallon to live with my CPDs.

YES! someone who knows how to pick good names! I didn't like the name of "dream blue rili" because it didn't really seem to do justice for me so I called Azure Rili's but hey your strain shall have em.

I have to cull and watch the strain for maybe a little longer to make sure I have a solid product! I only want the best! then I'll begin selling them. I really want a good blue color and size. I want to make sure they are stead fast too. But they are neos and they are always hardy.

Default Drum roll......

Sorry for the bad pics. I have a poopy camera. Plus I only got to take maybe a dozen shots before the camera winked out.

Looks like they have a greenish tint, is that because of the lighting?
