After looking over the methods used by others here, I was unhappy with the choices available. Either the bulbs were too expensive, or not good size-wise.
Ultimately, I decided upon the following: Phillips F72 T12 6' 85watt HO 6500K bulbs. This will allow for coverage w/o overlap or underlap. Thoughts? BTW, I am vacillating over which ballast to use. There are the good ol' fashioned type, and the electronic a la Fulham. The latter appears more expensive. But is it worth it??

The only concern with using lourescent tubes like those is how quickly they deteriorate. They usually need to be replaced every 6-9 months, whereas compact flourescent tubes need to be replaced every 12-18 months. The 96 watt CF bulbs are 3 feet long and using two of them side by side should work quite well for you. Just my opinion.
