My angels are kicking the snot out of each other
I have had 2 angels in my tank for at least a year, they both came in as juveniles and grew up together. About a month ago, I found some eggs on the glass, (I also have Congo tetras and cories in the tank) so I don't know who layed them.
over the last couple of weeks, my angels have been beating each other mercilously, I had thought it might be spawning. I did see some of that behavior, however the beatings continue. Is this normal for spawning angles, I dont know the sex of them, however I thought I had one of each. Or are they likely both males maturing and getting mean? Thanks for the help. |

With egg stuck to the glass I'g guess it was either the Corys or Angels. Congo Tetras are egg scatterers.
I've lost a couple of wild Angelfish to this kind of sparring. Right now it doesn't seem to have anything to do with spawning, just establishing the hierarchy within the tank.

Probably sparring, unless they're starting to clean something up together.

Are they lip-locking? Males might fight, but they are a mating pair if they bite eachothers lips and won't let go.
What size of tank are they in? I had a very violent angel pair, but they did settle down a little when they were in a larger tank. Unfortunatly, they were so violent I eventually had to seperate them for a couple months. When I put them back together, they seemed much nicer to each other.

I have seen them cleaning the filter intake and leaves of my jade lotus, as well as lip locking. So I guess it is spawning, I didnt realize that it would last this long. BTW how long does this go on? I just hope they get it out of their system, one has lost a lot of scales.
The tank they are in is a 90 gallon |

The weakest link of my wilds wasn't just missing scales in the end. It had a hole through its body just above its anal fin.

Wow! they shouldn't be fussing about room, that is for sure.
Mating.... ahhhh.... They joys of spawning angels! (Please see my signature...lol) If they are anything like our angels... and from the sounds of it, they are... there is pretty much no end in sight. They will get a little less fisety during non-spawning, but right back into it as soon as they spawn again, which, I am sorry to tell you can be as short as 6 days! My best advice is to avoid the things when possible that make them spawn really frequently... they like to spawn at around 80-82 degrees in mid to low ph water, and (like many fish) go nuts right after a large water change. I would suggest lowering your temp to 74-75 degrees if possible and see if it might be workable to raise your ph/kh to a little above 7.2. Of course, if you have a spare/quarantine tank, it may be a good idea to seperate them for a week or two. It really can do wonders for their marriage. lol Melafix is great for keeping the damage clean and helps them to heal properly after damage, too. Honestly... after raising several hundred angels and having 3 matting pair that spawned on the same day, in different tanks, in different rooms, ever 6 days, beat up on each other mercilessly.... I wish you well.... (and go to hid under the desk).

I have an angelfish that turned evil after the first time he spawned. He killed 2 other angels in my 90 gal and then after a while turned on his mate who just barely survived. I have tried recombining him with other angels but he quickly and relentlessly starts to attack the other angels in the tank, male or female. I figure he just snapped and has become criminally insane. He gets very agressive when people are close to his tank too, lol. IMO, occasionally you get an angelfish that can't play nice.
