120 planted Discus tank Journal

To start I am growing the Discus out in my 125GB.I had this piece of driftwood siliconed in place dead center int he tank for years. It took some doing but it is off center now.I am doing the DSM using mineralized potting soil and 10% red clay covered in black sand.Lighting is 3-60"T-5.I have bought a 20#co2 bottle but am still looking for dual stage regulator Apex and all the other stuff I need.I have about 6 months to get this thing up running and stable before I will be adding my discus from my grow out set up

That driftwood looks amazing, will be watching to see how it turns out, I am not ready for discus myself, but I am sure they will enjoy their home.

As for ferts, I would recommend this http://greenleafaquariums.com/aquari...rtilizers.html

At least as a starting point

I used dirt in a couple tanks, I skipped the dolomite because my water is pretty hard anyway

Here are a couple links about it:

You can get dolomite from garden stores but you need to be aware of what's in it and get the right kind, this helps

what are you planning on feeding your discus?.... i started out with gravel as my substrate but soon realized that sand was better do to the fact that i fed mine black worms(and homemade beefheart cubes) and it was easier for my discus to pick the worms out of the sand. it was amazing to watch them puff the sand out of the way to get to the worms. as for plants you need to make sure that you get ones that can stand the temp of a discus tank.. i kept mine at 84-86 and amazon swords thrived with no co2 or ferts.

Alright just a little update here so the piece of driftwood started drying out and cracking so I guess the DSM is out.So I add some pot ash and dolomite to the bottom of the tank.I then mix 3lbs of red clay in water, tell it dissolved.Them mixed it in 40lbs of top soil and and capped with Black sand.
