new lighting

hello all this is my first post
i am, within the week going to be compleatly redoing my 30gal and I want it to look great of course. so I'm asking eveyone what they think the best and cheapest form of lighting is, I will be building a new hood so that I can get the lighting I need. I'm also puting in a sand substrate and a DIY co2 system :lol:

anything that you cna help me with would be great

What does your budget look like? How much do you want to spend on lighting?

I think Rex is more interested in what country you live in. People in Australia for example have a very difficult time of getting power compact lighting cheaply because the shipping charges can double the cost of lighting.

Well actualy AHsupply arent that bad, they quoted me $35 on shipping to South Africa, might realy be worthwile if I take 3 kits.

Anyway, right now I must go bath, going for gastroscopy in 2 hours, so scared I'm shakeing.

Back to topic, I'm using 96 watt power compact fluorescent bulbs(and fixtures) over my 30 gallon tanks. http://www.plantedtank.net/forum/vie...amp;highlight=

I used to use shop lights with normal output daylight fluorescent bulbs, but I was laying two shop lights over three 30 gallon tanks which used up the overhang. But knowing what I know now I'd just go for the 96 watt PC's since you're gonna want them later. Assuming, as Rex has mentioned, that you live in a place where you can get them.

Is that a 36" Long tank or a 30" long tank?

If its a 30" long tank I would get

2 x 55 watt Bright Kit™ Item # 30552 $64.99
55 watt 21.1" 6700K 11556 $18.99 (you'll need two of these)

So $102.97

If its a 36" long tank I would get

1 x 96 watt Bright Kit Item # 40961 $59.99
96 watt 34.1" 6700K 11966 $32.99

So $92.98 total

I think that might be too much light. I have a 55 gallon with the two 55 watt kit from ahsupply and I wish it wasn't so much. With CF from AHsupply, I would think only about 2 watts per gallon b/c the reflectors are really really really good. We do need the dimensions of your tank though to figue it out.

3.6 watts per gallon with CO2 is pretty decent though.... If this was for a tank without CO2, I'd tone it down...

I run a 4x55 watt AH Supply kit on my 55 gallon and love it. Sure it's work but I get great plant growth and hardly ever have to turn the lights on in the living room.

It all depends on the plants one wishes to grow.
