I'm thinking about getting the Hagen CO2 system but wondering what is this Plant Gro Activator, Refill pack? Do I need it or can I make it cheaper? If I need it, how long does it last?

My second question is, I have java moss but its growing hair algae I think. I have some other plants in my tank such as westeria, amazon sword, and micro swords but the hair algae seems to be growing only on the java moss. (sorry, I dont have a digi cam) I'm pretty sure its hair algae from other pics I seen of it. How might I go about getting rid of the algae? I have SAEs and algae shrimps but they dont seem interested in eating it. Unless java ferns look like hair algae when they grow....
thanks for any and all help

the refills for the hagen consist of yeast and baking soda.

The activator is just like usual.Just that the stabilizer packet will make it last longer....that's all.

How long you have planted the java fern?

Check nitrate levels, if nitrate is zero, green hair algae is what I will get.

How long you have planted the java fern?
so is it worth it to buy the activator? or only if you're lazy?
and i mistyped it, its the java moss thats growing the algae hair, not java fern, although i have both planted in my tank.
the java moss is my most recent addition to my tank.. ~1-2 weeks ago

I have two hagen units-dont waste your time on buying refills. The exact quantities of the activators contain:
1/8th teaspoon of yeast
1 Tablespoon of baking soda
At my LFS they charge you something like $4.99 for these packs of "starter." wow what a profit margin for hagen..............

Em i prefer DIY CO2 system...The hagen CO2 only has 1 canister while DIY....as many as you like and you can modify the system.(check valve, stop valve, blablabla)

The best part about the hagen system is the CO2 diffuser, and the CO2 tubing. Luckily you can buy these separately from sites like dr. foster & smith.
