1st Iwagumi Mr.Aqua 17.4g DSM

my first attempt at a iwagumi.

be kind. this is my first attempt at an iwagumi style tank and this is my first journal.

started 5/22/13

this is what i have so far:
  • Mr. Aqua 17.4g
  • Eheim 2211 canister filter (think it's too small) 2215
  • Cal aqua nano lily pipes (i thought i was doing a smaller tank)
  • Coral Life T5HO 2x 10,000k bulbs
  • 5lb co2 tank
  • milwaukee regulator w/solenoid
  • ADA Aquasoil
  • ADA Powersand
  • Seiryu Stones x7

Plants:
  • dwarf hairgrass
  • dwarf baby tears

Most Current Picture 7/5/13:

At first i was gonna do a 11.4g Mr. Aqua tank. I bought Cal Aqua nano lily pipes and a small eheim 2211 canister filter. After I put the 11.4 on the cabinet I had...I had to go bigger. It looked ridiculous.

Picked up a 17.4g Mr. Aqua and a Coral Life T5HO fixture.

Frosted the back

Drilled holes for my canister filter

Lily pipes look really small but hopefully it'll work ok with the substrate in.

I put in everything

Forgot to put in the powersand so i took everything out. Also took out a stone and added a better looking one

Pics of the hc and hair grass

i'll try to upload weekly pics. hope the hc grows in quick. does anyone have any tips on growing hc faster?
I covered the tank with cling wrap and left a small area uncovered.
Lights are on for 8 hours a day.

Update 6/1/13:

Update 6/5/13:

got my bigger filter in the mail today. (2215)

comparison between the one i was gonna use (2211)

Update 6/8/13:

End of week 2

Update 6/8/13:

Things didn't go as planned. i give up dsm. i filled it

Good start, everything looks good so far. Let those plants grow even though I'm sure you want to get those nice lily pipes running already heh

I disagree with a dry start only cause sometimes the HC tend to melt after 1-2 weeks. Flood it already and let the bio Eco system build up.

Whenever you want. I have a bowl that's been DSM with only small bits of trimmings and I have almost a full HC carpet. Also be careful with the DHG. Put in plastic divider sheets or something like that to prevent it invading HC. Trust me, there's just about nothing my tank hasn't thrown at me, and sometimes it's mentally very stressful. On another note, how did you frost your background? If you used window film where did you get it? Looking great by the way.

Thanks for the input. I do have a divider in. It's just a piece of plastic I had lying around. Hoping the dhg doesn't find it's way over or under it. As for the frost, I got it from Home Depot. It's just a cling film used for windows. Think it's called window privacy screen or something like that.

Waiting for a bigger filter coming in the mail. Do you think the eheim 2211 is enough for a tank this size?

Hey Nice start! Where did you get this tank from? I was thinking about getting the 11.4. What filter are you getting? If you get a 2215, you can make a Co2 reactor for it. The only bad thing is your lily pipes are too small for the bigger filter(if you got the correct size for 2211).

The only suggestion I have for the HC is to try and get some more and put in bigger clumps. I had my tank in dsm for about 3 months. I should have flooded it after 2 months but I got lazy and it started to turn yellow and die.

Aloha,

Kai

Hey Kai808, I picked up this tank for cheap from a guy on Craig's (hope there's no leaks) he said he got it from pets plus by ward. I also saw it at coral fish in the upstairs area.

As for the filter I got the 2215 coming for this tank. The pipes will fit the tubing. For the 2211 I have now, I would've had to make an adapter to make both tubes 1/2". Think the 2211 has an intake of 1/2 and output 3/8.

I want to put in more hc but I didn't have much to start with. Do you know where I can get some? Tried kalihi pets and Petland. Thanks

I saw two pots of HC at Coral fish today. They usually cost $8.99 for one. Try calling aquascapes to see if they have any.
