Hobbies and professions. I work IT (For Fred, that's Information Technology). I don't even want to think about how much of my life would be wasted typing out the expansion of common acronyms. For that matter, even our browsers require acronyms to function....

HyperTextTransferProtocol://WorldWideWeb.plantedtank.net

Yeah...... No thanks. That would be a pain to manage such lengthy expansions, especially on the domain naming service servers, which are already finicky when translating a Uniform Resource Locator to an Internet Protocol address.

That does sound difficult. I'm pretty average when it comes to electronic age kids computer literacy.

I will note I said professions, too, in my second graf. That's paragraph in journalese :p.

Some times it still throws me now, for example...

"Should i put MTS in my tank?"

You want to put Multiple tank syndrome in your tank .... Huh ?
The bad part about some acronyms is that they have multiple meanings. MTS = multiple tank syndrome, Malaysian trumpet snails, and mineralized top soil. Which one is being used at the time will have to be determined based on the rest of the subject material.

I hate typing out Halfmoon, Halfmoon plakat, Doubletail, dragonscale plakat, dragonscale halfmoon, plakat or veiltail. It's a lot easier to write HM, HMPK, DT, DSPK, DSHM, PK, VT.

I hate acronyms as well but they are necessary within small groups/friends etc... I work with business people and they try to communicate with the public with acronyms. I just point out the mistake they're making.

You really just ended a rant about being lazy and using acronyms with two contractions? One of which isn't even grammatically correct.

While I do think some are easier and more common(imagine telling someone to go to Home Depot to buy some poly vinyl chloride pipe), I think there should be a sticky that defines each acronym for people new to the hobby. I remember when I joined the site I would read some of the posts and I had no idea what some of them meant. I spent more time finding the meanings than finding the info I was looking for. The comment about the ones that have more than one meaning could really mess you up.

Thanks! Not only is that a good list, it's also a nice glossary of terms to know in the hobby!

I think it's okay to use acronyms within groups that use certain terms frequently in order to save time and space as long as the acronyms are commonly understood.

I have to agree that people are getting lazy and it's not acceptable to use acronyms and abbreviations for everything. I'm only 32, but I can't understand half the text messages I receive or many facebook posts. I don't even like to text message, it's much faster and easier to make a phone call. Young people in the United States today (I don't know about elsewhere) are losing the ability to communicate in written English based on what I can tell from my classmates in college. It's getting to a point that I'm very concerned about the fact that these people will be running things someday.
