Newbie Looking for Tips

Hey everyone,

I'm fairly new to all of this stuff. So far I've managed to put together 4 different Walstad-method bowls for bettas, snails and ghost shrimp.

I've recently started experimenting with threading java moss to stones, wood, etc.

Basically, I'm graduating college next week and don't have tons of cash, but love the hobby. I've set up all of my bowls for about less than $20 and all are doing well despite some negative comments from people on my pictures.

I plan to eventually set up a nice big filtered tank when I can afford to, but sticking to the low-tech for now.

My questions:

What's the best place to find driftwood?

My next bowl will be for RCS that I ordered through my LFS. I'm thinking of using pool filter sand instead of gravel for my cap. Besides java moss, what are some other plants that would do well in a Walstad bowl that aren't gonna hurt my pocket?

Any other tips for a newbie? Please be nice haha.

Thanks!!
