My little German Blue Rams bred for the first time, advice?

I have 2 out of 4 rams that have just made a nest in my 55 gal community tank. There are no aggressive species of fish in my tank, only others are smaller tetras, otos, and corydoras. I do have a fairly powerful canister filter, was thinking of putting a sponge on the intake. Is there anything I should watch out for and do rams usually make good parents? They seem to be guarding their nest fairly well, taking turns swimming over it. This is the first time these rams have ever bred, and they are fairly young.
