Betta gill

Just brought home a pet smart white crown tail male betta. He is pure white. Under his gill plate and sticking out on each side there is a black speck which looks like a large speck of course ground pepper. I have never seen this before. I thought it was just part of his pigment but it is definitely more like a skin flap inside the gill cover. Anyone familiar with this?

Is it his beard? Some males have visible beards even when they aren't flaring. Here's a picture from google showing what it looks like:

I will try to get a pic. On both sides it just kind of flaps around.

Another picture. He acts normal. I don't think there is illness here. Unless its some kind of worm in there. You can't really see anything here. Only how pretty he is. Lol

Where on the pictures is the speck you see? I'm guessing it is his beard also. Have you tried to look at him from underneath, a good view of his belly? On my male I can see his beard really well from the underneath even when he isn't flaring. If you put a mirror up to his tank and he flares, does that change the location of the spot?

He's a really pretty betta.

He doesn't flare up easily. I have only seen him do it once. He seems to enjoy looking at himself very much. I have another betta tank next to this one and I can let them look at each other but I don't like to do that too much. He won't flare at the other betta either. He has flared at me once. Lol

When he breathes and swims or surface gulps the spot moves up and down and sometimes sticks straight out. If you can imagine a skin tag on a person it's just what it looks like cept coming from under the gill plate. It's on both sides but one side is larger. It's odd. I still love him though.
