That's what I use in mine - if I even use the ceramic... (But I run two other filters on that tank . . . )

+1 I do this for most of my HOBs. If you got the money, upgrade from biomax to seachem matrix (pumice rocks) or Eheim coco puffs.

In two of mine I have nothing but filter floss and plants. The other two I have a mix of coco puffs and some other ceramic media, a pad to keep them in place, and plants.

I just bought some purigen as well for it's polishing capabilities, but I don't have it in any of them yet.

I'm running an AC50 with the stock sponge and bio media, and an extra AC20 sponge I had lying around just for the heck of it. I have a jar of Matrix, but just haven't gotten around to putting it in there yet...and once my budget recovers from this past weekend's finds (stumbled upon a couple HUGE deals...a Deep Blue 36" dual-bulb T5 light and eheim 2217 for my 40B project) I'll probably hunt down some purigen and extra filter floss to get the water looking a little nicer.

I run a thick layer of floss sandwiched between two coarse sponges in my ac20.
