Cool... How many watts is that 18" plant light, 15 watts maybe. You're gonna need 2 watts per gallon minimum for a low light tank. 3 watts per gallon would be better. That means 60 watts for a 20gal. tank. If you want to have nice plants there really is no other way. Plants need light to grow. If they don't get it they just slowly wither away and die. Theres a lot of ways to add more light. Take a look in the lighting section of this board. Theres also some stuff in the DIY section if you'd like to try ODNO lighting. ODNO is a way to boost the output of standard flourescents to make them brighter. Check it out!!!

Im sure you already know this but make sure you wash your kitty litter VERY good. i made the mistake of not fully washing some extra litter i put around some plants and even that little bit clouded the water for a few hours......and with that 18" im taking it that it is 15watts with od'ing that light you should be able to get about 50watts out of it......and i believe i read somewhere on this site that od'ing those lights at only 2x power(instead of 4) gives you about 30watts of light...and if that is the case just od 2 lights at 2x power and that way you will have 60watts equaling 3WPG.....which is pretty ideal for most plants

Oh i forgot to mention this you CAN use 4foot t8/t12 ballast for your 18" bulbs which leaves you with room to expand if ever needed

No in the Od'ing post the ballast they are talking about are ones you can buy from HomeDepot/Lowes ect....just make sure when you get the ballast it is an electronic one or else you have to fiddle with starters and "crap"......and the part they are building would be the canopy (havent read the post in a while so i might be wrong...but building a ballast seems sorta tuff)...good luck

Your bulb can't be 1 watt, I don't think they make one watt bulbs! You will probably need more light anyway, if you just have a single flourescent tube over your tank. I would definitely look in the ODNO post.
