Question About AlgaeFix

I've read much about AlgaeFix, mostly on Tom Barr's site, read about all the bad experiences some people have had. I'm curious if anyone has looked into a correlation with water hardness. I have extremely hard water (GH 55) and have seen no reaction form strong dosing with AlgaeFix, either from the fish or the algae. I wish there were some magic potion to get rid of chara in an outdoor tub.

Maybe related, my vals don't mind strong doses of Excel.
